Hi Scott
Just a little update on Larson (Eric)
He's turning out to be just as you said, learns very fast so train slowly!! the only thing he'll be seeing this season is beaters day at my side with the gun!!
The little chap is extreamley fast thus as a novice trainer I've found it hard at times to correct him at the appropriate moment but if anything its improved my ability to pre empt whats going to happen next!! The only thing I cant seem to calm down is his eagerness and speed when retreaving he hurtles towards me like a misile!! and either flys past about five strides or into me and knocks me over, so I've been standing with my back to a fence or wall and so far it seems to be steadying him off a bit.
His hips scores have come back 4:5 and he hasnt been a bit of trouble health wise as of yet
Dear Scott,
Thank you for your considered response. We very much value your advice and the time you have given to preparing it. Your advice regarding rescue dogs is sound and very much what we had decided ourselves. We did not fancy inheriting someone else's problems and felt that with children and other animals around we would prefer to socialise a pup here from a young age.
Hello Scott
Happy New Year to you, hope you and your family are well.
Thought it was about time I contacted you regarding Kelly to let you know how she is progressing.
She has made a smashing dog, quite tall and lean rather than stocky, very fast!!! She is absolutely fine with the family and people she comes into contact with regularly but was very nervous with strangers, especially the vet, whom she hates with a vengeance. This came to light when we took her to be hip-scored, although she had been before to have her inoculations. Her score came out equal at 3/3 total 6. She seems to be getting over her nervousness as she is growing up and there is no problem on shoot days when her mind is on work.
As for work, obedience was no problem whatsoever, retrieving was never going to be a problem but she will not work with dummies at any cost, that said what a cracking dog she has turned out to be. She has a natural ability for marking, an absolute game finder and terrific on runners.
She started off with a few days on the grouse, which she took to straight away and has done a fair share of pheasant days since, working as part of the team.
I have attached a couple of photographs, not brilliant as it is difficult trying to get her on the move. If I manage to get any decent ones I will send them to you.
Hello Scott,
I just wanted to drop you a quick line to let you know how Gigha is getting on.
She has settled in very well and is a very bold pup, loves being outside with everyone although not very keen on a collar and lead, but I suppose Idon't really blame her for that!
She has also just discovered what fun water is to play in, especially when it's her own drinking bowl, easy to paddle in and splash everywhere, she has also had her first proper bath when she decided to take a run and jump to join me in the bath last week.
I can't believe we've had her a month already, it has flown past and she seems to grow before our eyes each day. She's very playful and has managed to bring Fraoch round too, I think Fraoch has discovered an 'inner puppy' she didn't know she had!
The girls both love her and Gigha is very keen on them too, she especially likes the school run, and as you can imagine is very popular with all the kids who all want to touch or hold her on her lead, (I think maybe a side business is there, if I charged each one I'd make a fortune ha ha)
She had both her injections without any problem too. All in all she has settled well, she's a happy girl and is an absolute delight to have around, just a fast bundle of energy.
Thankyou again for everything, I'll keep you up to date with her progress and try and get some photos sent to you too.
Kindest Regards
Hi.
Thank-you for your time to-day, I will practice with consitency and firmness, and repeat and repeat the excercises until Corrie and I get it right.
It was great seeing your trained dogs and is incentive to reach a standard as near to perfection as poss.
The puppies and their Mum are stunningingly appealing, she is a lovely bitch.
Thanks again, it was good to meet you, will be in touch at some point in the future, I hope to be a good pack leader and trainer for Corrie, he deserves no less
Hello
I hope my e-mail finds you and your family well. My father and I bought two pups off Mr Forbes Snr back in 1996 called Echo and Edgar, I called My pup Merlin my father called his Teal. Unfortunately we lost Teal in May last year (he had a growth on his arturey), and we had to have Merlin put to sleep on Tuesday this week.
Both dogs were devoted to each other, they shared a kennel and a food bowl with no problems at all. I have lost count of the amount of people who stopped us to admire them, Teal was extremely athletic and lighter built than Merlin who was the undisputed leader of the pack.
Whilst hunting for runners etc they would hunt like a pack with Teal doing the flushing and Merlin doing the grabbing.
Teal loved water more than any dog I have ever know. In his first season my father wounded a duck that ended up in the Humber, he sent Teal to retrieve it and it swam further and further out into the estuary. I will not say how many yards for fear of you thinking I exaggerate. I will say however I have never seen a dog swim so far before or since. The remarkable is he came out of the water as fresh as he went into it, his athletersism was truly extraordinary.
Merlin, my dog was a character, with a heart as big as a house and the most honest of dogs. The day we pick them up from Bill's house in North Wheatley he told us one of them was a natural hunter and easily could survive in the wild, we can quickly found out this was Merlin. All through his life he would pick up and eat almost anything leading to many causes of gastro enteritis.
One day we were out pidgeoning and I had left Merlin alone in the hide whilst I set up my decoys, when I returned he was looking very pleased with himself as he had eaten all of my packed lunch!
As much as he enjoyed pidgeoning he never got used to camo nets, he would sit with his nose through a square and When sent to retrieve would take the net and poles with him ending up like a bag of washing tangled up in the field!
Whilst training him I sent him for a blind retrieve and he came back with a mallard (he thought dummies were very dull). His only failure was with a teal I shot on a evening flight that dropped dead on open ground, he just would not pick it up. One of Merlin's last retrieves was a teal again, shot on a evening flight that he eye wiped a spaniel for. He found it in a dyke and we had to lift him out of it, as this was last January and he was starting to get frail by then.
Thank you for reading my grieving ramblings I would like to close by saying both dogs did you proud by having a lot of hard work and fun at the same time.
I realise everyone says that their dogs were the best ever, but I know that ours were.
Thanks for the memories.
Hi Scott
how are you,i got dardaffin isla from you as a pup,she is coming on fine now,i had a problem with her not being very keen on retrieving dummys,i took your advise and she came on fine, she is part of my picking up team on grouse and shortly going onto patridge and pheasant, she never stops, retrieves well and is especially good on runners, she is a hoover on legs, she is the spitting image of her mother gypsy but smaller, she has a lot of admirers for her working abilities and her good looks,i would like to thank you again for letting me have a pup from you,
i have had her tested for hips, eyes and are fine
Hi Scott
I don't know if you remember me, but you very kindly had a chat to me about a possible stud choice for my FTW bitch.
I just wanted to say thank you and let you know what I decided in the end: I weighed everything up and decided against the dog we discussed, despite his obvious accolades. I went for Eastdale Harry, who is a dog I really liked this year and, I think, will provide a great match for my bitch. Hopefully pups, if there are any, would be due early March.
I was really grateful for your honesty about your experiences. Thank you. It's nice when somebody takes the time to help. And if I can ever return the favour, let me know.
Best regards
Hi Scott,
I have that difficult task of selecting one of the bitch puppies from our Christmas Day litter for myself.
I will leave it until the eleventh, if not twelfth hour but I was wondering if you could offer any comments about the colour of his parents.
The litter is split in colour, with most of them having the same colour as the sire/dam, then there is a much lighter colouring plus one male that is a very dark yellow.
Any comments on where the lighter shade comes from?
“Himself” continues to be a favourite, gentle and intelligence and if he has a fault, it is that he loves me too much.
Perhaps the wife could take a few tipsJ
Hi Scott,
A couple of photos taken yesterday. Went down to a farm managed by one of our club members and had a shoot on feral pigeons. We used a couple of fields of rape and had a great day. Bracken had a couple of retrieves using the shot pigeons and did very well. The younger dogs then had a couple of blind retrieves and again he did really well and his deliveries were excellent. I was very happy with him and boy does he like to hunt; great top watch
I hope all is well with you and the dogs. I regularly log on to your web site and enjoy seeing the various dogs and other photos.
Our season is just around the corner, starts the 7th May and our shoot has 16 or 17 shoots this year.
Dear Scott
Thank you very much for your email and link which I have read through. I find it VERY comforting and encouraging to find a breeder who obviously cares so deeply about his dogs. I will have no hesitation about booking a puppy with you as I believe that the puppy would have a perfect start to its little life, and to the best of my ability, I shall continue with that!
Thank you also very much for the phone call last night. I felt very secure in the fact that you have such a desire to keep your dogs happy and totally understood and agreed with you about Kay, and the fact that she, as a 3 year old who is used to living and working outside, would become unsettled and unhappy being brought up as a pet in our home.
As I mention, I hope that we can progress with this, in the anticipation finding a future member to my family!!
I shall send a £50 cheque to you, as is mentioned in the puppy buying page. I would appreciate it if you could email me when you receive this cheque.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Kind regards
Hi Scott
Sorry i've not been in contact for a while, but just to let you know drum is progressing very well, ive not been pushing him to hard but he is doing very well on dummies, ive been making them a bit more difficult over the last few weeks and giveing him alot of blind retreives, he stops dead to the wistle and takes hand commands well, i took your advice and took him along on my last picking up day, i kept him well back from the action but he didn't seem phased by anything and was ok jumping in and out of the pickup with the other dogs,i also let him pick up a very easy pattridge and a large cock pheasant witch he did without any bother. anaway i'll keep you posted, by the way i'm always happy to take advice so if you think i'm going to fast or for that matter to slow or anything else please let me know.
Regards
Hi Scott
Thought you might like to see how Blaze is coming along.
Couldn't have asked for a better dog intelligent, quick to learn, affectionate & loyal
Dear Scott,Bill & all,
last Fotos from Jonty with his first contact with Duck’s and after his first swimming in the sea.
Very nice and very perfekt his instinct,he like’s to swimming any time……….
All is well,i am very pleasure
kind regards
Both dogs are doing great
Hunter ("Jed") What can I say that I have not said before he gets better by the year. He is still a little nervous at times(only when he is taken by suprise) but is now keen to travel. A first class steady dog in all aspects of a peg dog and picking up always a very fast clean retrieve. I have had a lot of interest for him as a stud dog.I have yet to go down that avenue at the moment.
"Kyle" Now where do I start
His battery never seems to run out you must have noticed with the rest of the litter on the go the whole time !!
This will be his 1st season in the team.I will have no problem he is very keen and strong.
He retrieves very well and almost to hand. works and hunts very well. First class to hand signals aways watching me and will go where he is sent and returns to the whistle.
For a dog that is just 1 he has come on very well he works in Hunters shadow all day but now he has coming into his own as a good allrounder (always the 1st in the truck he loves it) This one will be one to watch in the future as he wants to be top dog, what more can I say.
Harry my black dog is just starting to struggle. He has served me very well but his hips are starting to play up. So I am glad I got "kyle" when I did. It is very sad to think 2 years ago he was he was the top dog at retrieving on various shoots as a game finder.
All I can say Scott as you know my dogs will only come from you in the future so keep up all the good work.
Keep in touch
Hi Scott
Just to let you know that Susie is settling in well she never even made a noise on the way home. She is eating well and slept all last night and has only had 2 accidents. She is getting on great with my other lab and the children especially my 2 year old son, she must be associating him with your son and seems to want to follow him everywhere! Many thanks for all your help and breeding a lovely pup - we are chuffed to bits!
Thanks again
Comments
he is going back to the vet this afternoon for his 1st injection , he finished his 3 day of worming yesterday and was fine with it. he was nearly 4.9kg when he got weighed last monday xx
sorry if im going on a bit im just so impressed by him cant believe how clever, sweet and good he is :)) steven told me your dogs were special and i have to agree, although i have very little/no experience of puppys i know bailey is not a normal dog and im so sure thats down to you and how you teach them so well right from the begining :))
Hello, I thought I would let you know how Hazel is doing. Last Friday she had her first experience of picking up at Driven Grouse and managed everything very well. She has so much potential to be a great dog that I am cautious not to do too much too soon with her.
So far with her training she has been up to the mark and not done anything wrong so so far I am not needing to correct any bad habits etc. On the pet dog front I still take her to dog training on a weekly basis which has been good for her. Her obedience is spot on and we have been asked to demonstrate at a local dog show which will be interesting...
It is always nice to get feedback and we are very happy with Hazel
Hey Scott!
Yes, loads of improvements...I even had to text my pal the other day...”oh my god...Bella’s walking to heel without a lead!” She’s tried it on a couple of times whining and stuff in the crate (interestingly not at all the first couple of times, and then she started to think, Oh, but I’m back home, why am I in here?!) So a couple of cups of water has almost stopped that! She doesn’t bug Tilly anywhere near as much as she used to and today when she met another dog that told her off she backed off immediately. Also when we’re on a walk and she’s on the lead i was really surprised by how she seemed to enjoy it almost as much as when she’s running around, her tail’s waving around in the air, no major pulling (the odd yank back needed) and her ears were pricked. I spose I was so used to letting her hoon around that I didn’t think she’d enjoy it unless she was. I haven’t re-introduced her to Hamish, her best pal back here yet, but will do it the same way you did with Tilly. So it was definitely the right choice to have you sort her out because until she went I hadn’t realised how stressed she was making me. I’ve had to tell her off a few times for whining in the crate and yesterday she scooted across the road to say hi to the neighbour but didn’t even reach him because she came back when I bellowed at her! amazing! So yes, really enjoying having the Bella Myster back. Cheers!
Hi Scott,
Thanks as usual for the advise. I do appreciate it. I suspected as much with the choke chain.
The problem with having a pup for the first time is that everyone you meet is a bloody expert. Everyone wants to tell you a way of doing something and that you NEED to have this or you HAVE to do that. It's having kids all over again! Differentiating good advice from crap is difficult.
As far as I'm concerned, Eddie's behaviour is fine. I've never needed to "tap him on the nose" or resort to special chains to stop him from doing something, we just praise him when he gets it right and I reckon he's been good as gold as a result. Everyone we meet has commented that Eddie is very well behaved, both around other dogs and on outings, so we must be doing something right. No one has ever had a complaint or bad word against him.
If I have any problems with Eddie's behaviour, you'll be my first port of call. I'll just stop listening to idiots I come across on our walks and we'll just keep doing our own thing for the moment.
Thanks again,
