Training classes
Socialisation
Once a puppy is out and about, it is important to introduce the pup to as many new experiences as possible, in a positive way.
This is a crucial time for a pup and if you want your dog to grow up to be balanced and confident then attending socialisation classes is a good start to a pups life
At the classes, which are open to all breeds of dog up to 6 months old (including gun dogs), we cover how to lay the foundations for training later on.
Because several people attend the classes it allows us to practice how to introduce puppies to other dogs in a controlled way.
Being around other puppies helps them to understand canine language and how to meet and greet without starting world war 3
Puppies get used to seeing and meeting other people and good manners and discipline can be introduced
It also gets the owners together to swap tips and enjoy being puppy owners. The classes are light-hearted and friendly
Standard Training - Non Gundog
This training classes are for dogs aged 6 to 18 months old. The class is for dogs that have undergone little or no training in the past.
Older dogs and dogs that have "failed" training or "problem" dogs are dealt with individually on a one to one bases
Standard training is formal classes where we cover the main areas of dog training for most people
Sit
Stay
Walking to heel
How to say "No"
Correction not punishment
How to be a "Alpha"
Staying calm when meeting and greeting
Gundog Training
Dargdaffin Gundog training is aimed at handlers and their dogs who are going to enter in to the day to day shooting field. Gun dogs should be between 6 and 18 months old and have no significant discipline problems
Your dog should be able to:-
Sit
Stay
Heel (on lead)
Recall
If you are having difficulty with any of the above please contact me so we can get the issues sorted out before you come to Gundog training. Please do not join the Standard Training - Non Gundog, as the focus is different for a Gundog basic training
Where as a lot of the training will be beneficial for those wishing to run their dogs in competitions it is not the focus of the training.
Handlers that wish to run their dogs in competitions are advised to contact their local Gundog club. A list of the clubs is available from the Kennel Club
The training is centred around good discipline in the field, handler and dog co-operation, game finding and retrieving
There are side classes after the main training to cover spaniels additional requirements of quartering and flushing
However 90% of the training is relevant to all gun dog breeds.
Please note we do not offer gun dog training to pointers or setters, this is best left to trainers that have much more experience than us in this area
This training will cover all the areas needed to introduce the dog to the field. Help and advice and an assessment will be available as the shooting season approaches to aid the transition from dummy's to field work
Yes and no. The training classes are there to teach you the skills of training your dog.
Attending a class once a week will not train your dog
It is up to you to take away the knowledge you have gained each week and apply it.
In other words we are teaching you how to train your dog, not training your dog
The classes will show you and explain to you want needs to be done.
Classes also offer encouragement and support when its not moving at the pace you would like
Some notes and thoughts
Training classes are great for dogs that are not showing significant behavioural issues. Classes allow like minded people to gather together and learn how to train their dogs in an environment that allows them to practice with other people and scenarios
It is true that a trainer will have picked up some canine psychology but few will be dog psychologists Some physiologists may be good trainers
A trainer trains a dog what to do and then the dog knows what is expected - but when it come to the following examples usually it is a canine physiologist that should be contacted
Hyperactive, jumps on people, disobedient - habitually doesn't come when called, runs away, overly fearful - shies away from people, animals, or objects, obsessive barking, antisocial - "doesn't like" dogs or humans, aggressive or predatory, overly territorial, possessive of toys, food, furniture, compulsive retrieving, chewing or tail chasing, shrinks from touch
The canine psychologist should be able to get to the reasons behind the behaviour and suggest to you a course of action. This may include the service of a trainer after the root causes of the problem have been dealt with.

Puppies must have had both their injections before they can join the class.
You will be asked to show your record book the Vet gave you
If you have not had your puppy health checked yet you can contact the Mintlaw Vets on 01771 624001

Can it be this easy?
